Capturing Character: A Session with Calon Llewelyn

One of the best parts of my job is seeing how an actor can shift the energy in the studio with just a slight change in focus or outfit. My recent session with Calon was a perfect example of this.

With headshots the goal isn't just to get "nice" photos; it’s about building a portfolio for casting directors to see the range of characters you can portray. Here’s how we used lighting, wardrobe, and mood to capture Calon’s versatility across four distinct looks.

1. The Classic Professional

In our first look, we focused on a clean, direct connection. With a simple dark tshirt and a textured blazer we captured a look that feels grounded and dependable, but also a bit edgy. There is a steady, quiet confidence here - the kind of "leading role" energy that feels authentic rather than forced; ideal for a serious drama or procedural.

2. The Cinematic Profile

I caught this moment in between setups. I love the contemplative and moody atmosphere, and a black and white conversion felt like the perfect accompaniment. It’s the kind of shot that makes a casting director wonder what the character is thinking.

3. Modern & Approachable

Next, we moved onto a setup with a softer, more colorful background. This look is all about warmth and accessibility. By losing the jacket and softening the light, Calon’s expression becomes more open. This is the "relatable" headshot - perfect for commercial work or a character-driven film where the role calls for someone likable and down-to-earth.

4. The High-Energy Contemporary

Finally, something more vibrant. Opting for a patterned, casual shirt changed the energy immediately. This look is bright, energetic, and youthful. It shows Calon’s ability to bring a sense of life and personality to the frame.

The Takeaway

What I love about this set is that while Calon’s unique features remain the focal point, the feeling of each photo is distinct. Whether it’s the intense focus of the darker portraits or the open, friendly vibe of the brighter ones, Calon brought a genuine sense of self to every frame.

It was a pleasure having Calon in the studio, and I can’t wait to see where these headshots take him next!
