Versatility and Character: A Cardiff Headshot Session with Flo Thompstone

In a competitive industry, an actor’s portfolio needs to be more than just a collection of high-quality images—it needs to be a toolkit. My recent session with Flo Thompstone in my Cardiff studio was a perfect example of how strategic wardrobe choices and lighting can expand a performer's casting range.

Studio portrait; actress with a warm, friendly smile and engaging eyes.
Strong female lead portrait; woman with a steady, unblinking gaze by Geraint Todd.
Engaging actor headshot; woman with a charismatic, direct gaze against a grey backdrop.
Formal period actor headshot; actress with a classical, high-society character look.

Defining the Archetypes

We began the session by focusing on grounded, dramatic looks. By utilizing a simple olive-green knit and a mottled, neutral background, we created an image that feels textured, warm and approachable. Flo’s eye contact is strong, balanced with an approachable smile.

Contrast and Impact

Moving into a high-contrast setup with a dark navy backdrop, we explored a more modern, cinematic vibe. Switching to a simple black tank allowed Flo’s features to take center stage. These shots demonstrate a "leading role" energy—strong, capable, present and defiant.

The Approachable Professional & Period Drama

Finally, we shifted to more structured looks. The third image is elegant but strong, and works well for commercial looks or "approachable professional" roles.  The last image is an impactful period look: the olive-green knitwear with lace trim and the mottled, neutral background combine with Flo's strong expression to suggests timeless classical portraiture.

These 4 very different headshots give Flo a truly versatile portfolio for Spotlight.
