In my latest session at the Cardiff studio, I had the pleasure of working with the incredibly versatile Noni Lewis. A brilliant actress and voice-over artist.
Noni needed updated actor headshots and images that she could use for her voice-over work at welshvoiceover.co.uk. So we built a visual narrative that covers the full spectrum of modern TV and Film casting, with a good few relaxed in-between-frames that she could use for her website and socials.
1. The Reflective Lead (Academic / Senior Professional)
Technical Precision: Soft, directional light paired with a shallow depth of field to isolate Noni and emphasize introspection.
2. The Approachable Hero (Relatable Lead / Commercial)
Technical Precision: Warm, even illumination and a vibrant color palette to signal energy and trustworthiness.
3. The Dramatic Intensity (Detective / Antagonist / Grieving Parent)
Technical Precision: Low-key, cinematic contrast with intentional shadows to create a sense of history and "presence."
4. The High-Status Expert (Surgeon / Lawyer / Senior Intelligence)
Technical Precision: Defined key lighting and a structured silhouette to convey competence.
5. The Grounded Realist (Grit / Resilience / Contemporary Drama)
Technical Precision: Tactile textures and atmospheric, earthy tones to create a "lived-in," authentic feel.
Why These Images Work for Casting
A great headshot is a tool for your agent. During Noni’s session, we focused on the Three Pillars of a successful professional portfolio:
1. Intentionality
We didn't just "take photos" - we worked towards specific archetypes. By moving from the warmth of a TV lead to the cold authority of a procedural specialist, we ensured Noni has headshots to match specific casting calls.
2. The Technical "Hook"
By varying the wardrobe and lighting, we ensured that Noni remains the undisputed focus. Using a variety of setups - from soft-fill to high-contrast "Rembrandt" style lighting - I ensured her eyes stayed alive and "speaking" to the lens. If the eyes are flat, the shot is flat.
3. Presence Over Posing
In the high-stakes dramatic shots, we stripped away the smile to find gravitas. We’re not looking for "nice" here; we’re looking for presence. These images prove Noni can hold the screen in a serious dramatic role.
The "In-Between" Moments: Why Outtakes Matter
Every actor knows that the best work happens when you’re relaxed. In Noni’s session, we captured "in-between" moments that are almost like the soul of the shoot. From a burst of genuine laughter to a playful, defiant middle-finger, these shots show the human behind the actor.
Casting directors are looking for a person, not just a face. By showing range - from the high-status surgeon to the laughing, grounded human - we give them a reason to pause and to request a self-tape.
